Doudoune oversize, t’es fan? T’as l’habitude d’en porter?
I am so proud to share with you an interview with my dear friend Sanne, a native opinion is always the best way to discover a country, don’t you think?
SANNE, 29 years old, living in Stockholm. Currently working as an English and Swedish teacher.
GIVE US YOUR VERSION OF A PERFECT DAY IN SWEDEN?
The start of a perfect day would be to have breakfast at home with my boyfriend then perhaps take a stroll along the lake in the nearby nature reserve. Later in the afternoon we would take the train to the city centre in Stockholm and hit a bar in Old town before meeting up with out friends to see a concert.
LIVING IN SWEDEN, HOW IS IT?
Living in Sweden is oftentimes for me a kind of love hate situation. The weather conditions are shifting all the time, either very hot or very cold. Personally I prefer early early autumn when it’s still warm but the air is cool and crisp and the colours of nature are shifting to red, yellow and orange. The nature is my country’s biggest asset I think and I love how the four seasons differ from one another. The political situation in Sweden is rather “messy” and heading for an unclear future. Our welfare is globally compared very well but a lot of things really could improve. I also think living in Sweden is easy and full of opportunities.
WHAT IS THE TRADITIONAL SWEDISH FOOD?
I’d say it’s potatoes and fish, meatballs and pork. We have gotten many of our most popular dishes from other countries and the dishes that has been considered traditional has changed over time. We love sweets.
DESCRIBE SWEDEN IN 3 WORDS?
Sweden is modern, beautiful and versatile.
WHICH ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF SWEDISH?
The main characteristics of the Swedish people might not be perceived as very charming, were known to be reserved and somewhat impolite but that applies mostly to people living in Stockholm I think. Generally people seem to keep to themselves. I think the long dark months of winter could be one of the reasons to that. We’re very punctual and trendy. Sweden is a diverse country with people from many cultures and customs. We’re very service minded and travel a lot.
WHEN WE THINK ABOUT SWEDEN, WE SEE IMMEDIATELY BLOND PEOPLE, DID YOU ALWAYS HAVE BROWN HAIR?
It may be true that blond hair is a common feature amongst people here in the north countries, but since the Swedish people comes from many different parts of the world we see all kinds of features and hair colours here. I was born a blonde, and my natural hair colour is of a darker blonde, I’ve dyed my hair regularly since I was a teenager. At the moment I’m a red head like my grand- grand mother!
“Me as a petite blonde! Photo by mum.”
HOW DO YOU SPEND SUMMER IN SWEDEN?
I spend my summers in Stockholm and in the north of Sweden, there’s nothing like the Swedish countryside during summer; green, blooming and romantic.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE PLACE IN SWEDEN?
My favourite place would be my grandfathers birthplace in the north of the country, once every summer I spend a weekend there with my large family. I love that place for its stillness, large forests, old beautiful wooden houses and folk music. I feel at home when I’m there.
“My grandfathers birthplace in Hälsingland. Photo by me.”
